With northwest modern material expression and form, the Division and Hawthorne project seamlessly melds into its urban and forested environment in north Spokane. Architectural expressions in the form of large overhangs and flying V columns help set the project apart and create a unique spatial experience. The project aims to start a conversation among developers and locals that a high level of design can be reached in something as simple as a strip mall.

Restaurant/Bar
2017
4700 sq. ft.

This new restaurant and bar celebrates the history of the inland northwest. Located in beautiful Ponderay, Idaho, this structure takes advantage of its proximity to the highway with a 35 ft tall silo. The client wanted to create an “architectural folly” to attract tourists and locals near the resort town of Sandpoint. The design was an exercise in solid and void relationships, and the form is derived from a deconstructed barn.

With cozy, outdoor seating areas, patrons are invited to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Large floor to ceiling windows and operable barn doors invite the outside in, providing a space that is comfortable all year round. The silo provides a monumental entry with its rusted steel panels reminiscent of the industry and farming of days past.

The adaptive reuse of an existing building in the downtown core of Spokane provided both a centralized location for their business and a far lower environmental impact than is possible with new construction. The space was also selected by Magner Sanborn for the overall quality of construction, abundant natural light and open floor plan. Magner Sanborn was responsible for the interior build-out of the existing 3 level space and engaged Uptic Studios in the design/development/construction of their human-centered work environment.  The project’s success relied on strategic thinking, visualization and open communication between user groups and the design team.

Re.pub.lic Pi is an architectural, interior, and branding project commissioned by established restaurateurs seeking a new twist on their successful model. Republic Pi repurposed a former restaurant site next to a popular gastropub. The two restaurants have transformed a sleepy parking-oriented retail strip into a lively neighborhood center. Republic Pi patrons are greeted with ample patio space shielded from the parking lot with steel beams, fencing,  and wood privacy screening. The steel and wood elements continue inside giving the space a sleek, yet cozy atmosphere. Log storage for the wood-burning pizza oven is celebrated as art throughout the space—displayed inside custom steel casework that carves the restaurant into intimate alcoves.

Iron goat brewing has found a space for patrons to call home. Reclaiming an historic building shell in the heart of downtown Spokane, Iron goat brewing celebrates adaptive reuse.  The shell has a great presence from the street, featuring large windows that provide heaps of natural light to the interior.

The architecture and design elements highlight the historical feel, leaving the original brickwork exposed and integrating industrial and rustic pieces to create a space that is true to the site. A large partition wall separates the seating area from the brewing spaces, yet translucent materials are used to integrate the two spaces. The result is a unique and industrial experience that will stand the test of time.

5th Ave Medical stands as a precedent for similarly programmed buildings throughout the northwest. The typical design of strip mall typology buildings are void of the architectural values of the northwest - materiality, site response, and human scale. 5th ave, through its sleek butterfly roof and contemporary moves, strives to bring the warmth of wood and natural light back into the office environment. Its carefully considered siting allows for maximum exposure to natural light, reducing the electrical load and providing clientele with a spatial experience during what would otherwise be a drab routine visit to the doctor. As an icon of the potential architectural expression of a small strip mall office space, 5th ave sets an example through its efficient use of inexpensive materials to create better space at a similar price. It stands guard over I-90, the butterfly roof winking at the ubiquitous traffic as if to beg that they see 5th Ave as an example for the design of future medical office space.

The flying goat restaurant transformed a former auto garage into a neighborhood hub. The original building’s industrial character is embraced with exposed steel beams, rafters, and concrete floor. Textured wood and rusting steel panels soften the decor. A shed roof soars over the fire pit and patio to draw the eyes of passer-bys. Strategically placed chain link fence turns the utilitarian material into a refined patio barrier. Horizontal wood slats inside and out carve the restaurant into intimate spaces while ensuring the atmosphere stays open and airy. The site enhances the surrounding neighborhood by placing emphasis on the pedestrian experience. The flying goat’s remarkable food and thoughtful design have made it a source of neighborhood pride and a regional destination.

The existing motel was a typical budget lodging before an art-loving hotel entrepreneur saw the potential of the unique site. Where most would see a cramped motel sandwiched between a tower, parking garage, and rail viaduct, the new owner saw the opportunity for a giant art canvas. The hotel now features an eye catching color scheme and enormous pieces of art hung on the adjacent structures. The most prominent piece acts as a wind buffer protecting the stair tower. At three stories tall the wind screen is comprised of thousands of perforations to replicate an image of a ballerina from which the owner draws inspiration. While the ballerina is constantly posed, she always feels in motion as the daylight moves around her.
